Tijd voor wat blauwe blokjes!

Heerlijk, mijn opleiding (werk, niets leuks quilterigs) is klaar en ik heb weer tijd voor af en toe een blokje. Ik werk nog steeds aan de blauwe-gele blokken voor oudste zoon.

techniek: eerst stof om papiertjes, dan aan elkaar naaien en vervolgens appliceren op een ondergrond.

Dit blok was lekker simpel, vierkantjes snijden en naaien. Met mijn nieuwe machientje fluitje van een cent!

Dit blok is gemaakt volgens paperpiecing methode, op papier dus. Net als de adventquilt, alleen een tikje eenvoudiger!

Van dit blok maak ik er 4: op elke hoek eentje. Met zelfde hart, maar andere 'stralen'. Leuk effect en trekt de blik naar het midden.

In totaal worden het 15 (3x5) blokken, van 40x40 cm. De blokken worden per stuk gequilt en dan pas aan elkaar genaaid. Heb ik niet eerder gedaan maar is wel lekker praktisch op vakantie, er hoeven maar een paar blokken mee voor wekenlang quiltpret!

Slechte foto maar voor het idee: dit moet het ongeveer gaan worden. Elk blok wordt met eigen randen 'vergroot' tot 40x40. Wordt weer vervolgd!

nieuw blok in blauw

De afgelopen dagen heb ik verder genaaid aan de geel-blauwe blokken voor de quilt voor Frank (ooit.... dit lijkt me een meerjaren project). Het nieuwe blok heb ik met de hand genaaid, mbv malletjes op de stof het patroontje overnemen en dan goed opletten hoe het in elkaar past (niet mijn sterkste kant- maar gelukt!)

Het resultaat is leuk en mooi grafisch:

En terwijl ik binnen aan de slag was werd er buiten hard gewerkt aan een nieuw terras en grasveld in de tuin. Met een prachtige bezoeker:

Het voorjaar hangt in de lucht!

you've got mail!

Deze week heb ik meegedaan aan een charm swap, georganiseerd door Marcha . En vandaag heb ik zowel zelf een setje lapjes ontvangen als een setje op de post gedaan.

Dat is weer eens wat anders dan een saaie rekening in de brievenbus! Kijk maar:

Leuk aan dit idee vind ik dat je zo weer hele nieuwe ideeën krijgt van hele nieuwe stofjes.

New project:

It's time for something completely different. Well... it's all about patching, but for a new quilt!

I found this very inspiring book, Sampler quilts by Lynne Edwards, and I spent a weekend looking at all those beautiful blocks with all the different techniques.

Every block is explained very clearly with nice drawings and pictures of different sample quilts,

here 's a picture of 'grandmothers fan':

I started with to blocks by hand. Since the quilt will be for a teenage-boy, fabrics with flowers, hearts or other girly prints are absolutely forbidden. The colours he has choosen are blue on a yellow background.

The blocks are still in progress, but I like the idea. And it's so much fun to do!

pink& brown applique

Since I'm following the applique workshop of Pat Sloan, I made some funny blocks last weekend to practise the technique. No pattern, just a little fantasy and some nice fabrics!

first applique lesson learned

I've done my first little applique job ever - by machine (and I really looooove my Janome!)

My first and second try were not very good (or really bad!) but the third one was quite allright:

On the left side: to much blue stiches, on the right side (under): lost my way!

Back to the crockery

In May 2010 I started with paper piecing, in bright pink colours and crockery shapes. This weekend I made the next step: from block to top.

I bought purper fabric for the backside, and the borders. So next step is the sandwichmaking, but first I have to gather a little courage... so difficult to do!

I also bought some fabrics for the Heartsproject, very cheerful:

sharing my heart...

Happy new year! 

And since January is not my favourite month of the year I wanted to do something nice... something with fabric, needles and my new machine. So when I got an email with an invitation to join an online workshop with Pat Sloan  "share your heart" .... and I became a student of the Patchwork Posse! 

This is the plan to make:

 

I'm very excited, I don't have that much of experience with applique, but I want to learn and use my new machine. I hope to tell you more soon!

A new machine and a new quilt

Last day of the year, time for flashbacks... but also time for something completely new: a Janome 2030 QC!

After lots of trouble with my old (ancient) Singer I really really really wanted a new sewing machine. And here it is! 

And since I don't have to work these days I used it to make a cute little baby-quilt, in fresh Dutch colours..

And in close-up:

The best thing of this quilt: EVERY stitch is perfect. I'm so happy with my new best friend!

En deze hadden we nog tegoed!

Bijna kerst.... dat betekent dat de verjaardag van Fenna er weer op zit. En het was leuk! Hier wat plaatjes van hoe de stofjes uit mijn vorige post omgezet zijn in schortjes en een hoop lol.

Natuurlijk mocht ze ook tracteren op school, dus nog meer geknutsel. Leuk, jarig voor de kerstdagen!

Bijna jarig!

Onze jongste is bijna jarig. Altijd extra druk tussen Sint en Kerst maar natuurlijk maken we ook van deze verjaardag een leuk feestje! Dit jaar hebben we schortjes nodig voor de dames die op het feestje komen. Ze zijn nog niet klaar, maar de ingrediënten liggen er. Frisse kleurtjes, helemaal niet-kerst en dat is voor deze keer ook precies de bedoeling!

De grote rechthoeken worden het basisschortje, de gele stof de tailleband met strik op de rug en an de 8 verschillende stofjes daarboven komen er 8 verschillende zakken op het schortje.

Een beetje serveerster heeft natuurlijk een opschrijfboekje bij zich met een pen (het betreft een nog niet gedigitaliseerd restaurant ;-) ), en daar hebben we die zak voor nodig...

De basisstof had je misschien al herkend, komt van Ikea. Leuke stevige stof die voor ieder meisje een ander schortje op gaat leveren. Hier nog een plaatje:

Alles moet 21 dec klaar zijn, werk aan de winkel dus!

I proudly present...

... my finished Nativity quilt!

I made an Avent Calendar with numbers 1 - 24 with star-shaped buttons. Every morning one of the kids hangs a little bell on the right button. And as you can see, it mixes up with the lego-wintervillage very well.

Here's an other close up, I promiss it's the last Nativity picture I'll show. In real live the squares with the numbers are squares. It's not perfect, but I really like it.

There where lots of times I thought I'de never finish this quilt, and a few time I even thought about throwing it all away. So every December-month from now on I'll be a little proud of me, and enjoying this quilt very, very much.

working together

Er is een nieuw handwerkwinkeltje in de stad, en eerder deze week ging ik even langs met mijn dochtertje. Natuurlijk kon ik de knotjes, boekjes, pakketjes en andere fijne spulletjes niet weerstaan!
Ik kwam thuis met onder andere een nieuw materiaal kunstleer, om te borduren, speciaal leuk voor borduurstertjes in de dop.

Vanochtend gingen we aan de slag. En is het geen lief plaatje?



Het resultaat wordt leuk, en álle kruisjes staan dezelfde kant op! Natuurlijk is het nog niet af, nog 2 letters te gaan!

Ik ben zelf intussen ook verder aan het borduren, de kerstquilt moet echt af op 1 dec, dus alle andere projectjes liggen even weggestopt. Voor het blok van Maria heb ik nog geen tijd gehad, maar wel een paar cijfertjes erbij geborduurd.

't Is uit de losse pols dus niet helemaal strak, maar het wordt wel leuk!

shining buttons

As I wrote before, I want to make an Advent calendar with the Nativityblocks. Today I did some shopping, and I found the most special buttons I could image! Here some pics of them:

The pin next to the buttons is to show you how little they are, just a subtile sparkling element!

So here's my plan:

I make squares on darkblue fabric (same as I used in the quiltblocks)

with two different blue threads

.

In the squares I'll sew the numbers 1-25 (Advent!)

with yellow thread, and in every square a button to hang on a little ornament (Advent!).

I'll use the kettingsteek,

I found a good description (never been a good embroiderer :) ).

So now I'll search the net for a nice font to use.

And of course, still have to make the last 3 blocks. But I have a little hope that it's finished at the first of December...

The third king

A rainy sunday afternoon, time to make the third king, the Dec 22th block. It's quite a puzzle to find out which 'block' I made today, but it's the king who's standing in the middle of the other kings.

As you can see, there are only a few blocks left to make. The cradle, Josef and Maria: 3 blocks to go.

My plan is to embroider an Advent calendar beneath the nativityscene, on a dark blue fabric.

But first the last blocks, I'm looking forward to start with them!

another bag

Since I'm back to school (workrelated course, absolutely non-interesting for quilters) I have even less time to sew than before. But last week I had a birthdayparty at my sister's and I made her this big black bag:
