pink&red one: last post

In march 2009 I visited an exibition of quilts at the Fries Museum Leeuwarden. I was so impressed by all those beautiful quilts that I bought some fabrics, a book and I started to make different blocks. I had no idea what to make of those blocks, I just wanted to try to make different blocks - all by hand, I didn't know anything about quilting and all the quick techniques there are.

And today, 2 years later, I show you the quilt I made of all those blocks. It's a real trying-to-quilt-quilt, because it's a mixture of all those blocks I wanted to sew! So with some sashings and a little fantasy, it became a pink&red quilt.

And here are a few details: my favorite combination of 4 blocks with a star :

So I sewed all the blocks by hand, and used my singer for the sashings. The quilting I did by hand. There were lots of moments when I thought that I could never ever finish this project, and I'm soooo glad it is right now! I read other blogs of ladies who make a quilt every month...
So one final picture and I'll go on with my other projects.

Have a nice day!

The pink&red one: still going strong

Goodmorning! Reading this blog, you could get the idea that I forgot about the pink&red one. Well, that's wrong. The quilt-in-pogress lies on the couch, and every now and then I sew a little block. And since this quilt is for my daughter, 6 years old, there was a strong need for some blingbling. So in one of the cornerblocks I made her initials, with ribbon and some (little sparkling) bangels. Here are some pics:

I'm working on the block top left, and the blocksdown under are still waiting for some quilting (and some ironing, I'm afraid the cat has tested this as a potential catbed, well he'd better forget about that!).
All the blocks are square, the strange model of the blocks in the middle are caused by the way the quilt hangs over a couch.

It's a nice thing to do, and I'm allready thinking about a new handsewing project.

Have a nice day!

Pink&red (2)

This week I quilted a part of the Pink&red one. For the first time I quilted together with my mum on this piece, we felt just like the women in the early days must have felt; we enjoyed it a lot!
I quilt it big block by block, and try to make different patterns to learn. And the result of today:

I do like the effect!

Pink&red (1)

Today a few pictures of the first patchworkquilt I'm working on. I started after visiting a quilt exhibition two years ago. I was impressed by the works I saw and bought a book, Quiltpatronen (quiltpatterns) by Davina Thomas, and a few pieces of fabric. On our trip in may that year to Denmark I started, by hand, making different blocks.

Together with my little girl, concentrated on our work.
At the end of our trip I finished a few blocks, but had no idea how to combine them in one quilt.

Trying which combination will work

Now, one and  a half year later, I'm quilting the sandwich, still by hand. It takes a lot of time but I like the result.
and it needs a bit of ironing

There are about 8 big blocks to quilt... to be continued!
